Why on earth would this be fake? A large fraction of Americans believe that the bible is the “literal word of god”. This type of reasoning is broadcast 24/7 on television and radio all over this country. Don’t be so surprised that people actually believe what they say they believe (e.g. “I believe in the bible”).

  2. El Alecs

Incredible, just incredible, I can’t belive it, but @EnergyGuy is not just a large fraction of Americans, is a large fraction of humans in all the world.

  3. Steve G.

God is not Great (How religion poisons everything) – Christopher Hitchens. Read it.

  4. James

Hate to sound elitist, but the less educated you are, the more likely you are to place your faith in man-made fantasies.

  5. JadoJodo

As a Christian, I can understand this parent’s desire to avoid any confusion with regards to what their children are being taught at home and school. However, if they are this concerned, they may want to look at alternatives to public/non-Christian schools (e.g. Home-Schooling, a Christian private school, etc). While I do agree with her belief in regards to the age of the earth (Although, Christian scientists usually put it somewhere around 10,000 years), providing this as the explanation for the child’s absence from an activity is unnecessary. She should have simply stated they didn’t agree with curriculum at the facility and they would be keeping their child at home.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! In God We Trust is on money, but not because our forefathers were Creationists… please get that through your head and then look it up. Most of them were either atheists or agnostics. Go ahead believe what you will, but the movie Jurassic Park and the cartoon the Flintstones DIDN’T HAPPEN! There are at least 50 million years between the fall of the dinosaurs and the EVOLUTION of man. There is just no other way for us to have been successful. By the way, 10,000 years is just as bad. Does this mean that nobody believes in Carbon-14 dating??? Are we really that dense?

  7. James

Kaio, thanks for helping me prove my point.

JadoJodo, you seem like a nice enough person, but Christian scientists? That’s gotta be an oxymoron.

  8. a

Wow..JadoJodo, are you freakin serious?.. Do you honestly belive, deep down inside, that the world is 10000 years old? SERIOUSLY?!
Tell me, where do all the dinosaur bones or the caveman skeletons come from? I’m pretty sure there was no dinosaurs 10000 years ago.
    How do you explain that?

  9. Dan

wow… I weep for us. If this is a real letter, then we are really heading towards the abyss of ignorance.

  10. Tony

Heading toward the abyss of ignorance or teetering on the edge? There is currently a bill, hr 397, that will establish America as a “Christian Nation”. This is, by all accounts, the most disgusting piece of legislation to come through the House since last years Christian Nation bill that was shot down. It is this type of religious fundamentalism that could destroy the world. Christian Fundies are so sure that no one but their god can destroy the world that they are willing to stand back and do nothing while greenhouse gasses slowly suffocate the planet. This type of woeful ignorance will spell the end of life on this planet as we know it.

  11. Josh

I bet 90% of the items that the parent relies on in day to day life are a direct result of scientific advancments. The fact that we can even read about this on our computers is thanks to science. To not believe in science in this day and age must be a tenuous and painful stance of willful ignorance.

@JadoJodo: there are dozens of separately verifiable ways you can prove the universe and our planet are much, much, older then 10,000 years. This is not a belief, but rater a fact.

  12. April

Just makes me wonder what sort of environment the parent was raised in.

And I suppose the parents don’t work because “God” provides their food and housing too right?…..It all just appears?

I could use pages and pages just arguing against the idea of Adam and Eve, let alone religion, but instead I will only say that someone needs to explain to the parent that the bible is not a history book, merely messages of faith left up to interpretation. Anything else is pure fantasy.

  13. sighfox

as a christian, this just puts a bad name to all of us.
i dont believe the world is only 6000 years old.
there is evidence that dinosaurs existed you know.
this person has a lot of spelling mistakes as well.

to all christians, dont literally believe in the bible.
im only 15 and i know this.
god probably didnt make the earth in 7 days.
his one day may be billions of years to him. you never know.

but this response to the letter is so full of crap. please get properly educated. 🙂

  14. Mike

This is ridiculous. How could you bible thumpers be so stupid and ignore every shred of fact…

  15. Anthony T. Smith

It seems that no one has quite got it nailed yet. It doesn’t matter what you believe. It’s just that you believe. This is not a contest or a competition of wits and science. It’s a simple matter of opinion. For all we know, none of this even matters. Life is what you make it. Don’t let your opinions destroy you. Believe in something because if you don’t, all hope is lost.

  16. Rene Laforest

@Anthony T.Smith – “Believe in something because if you don’t, all hope is lost”? If you ask me, hope was lost when people started believing that they’re sinners because a snake convinces someone to eat fruit 6000-10000 years ago. Hope was lost when people stopped outgrowing the need for imaginary friends.

People who don’t like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn’t have such funny beliefs.

Read the book of JOB in the Bible (Old Testament) & it mentions great lizards etc……enough said & God Bless

aah yes. a good old religion vs. science debate! this really cracks me up, thanks for all the great comments middle america. Personally, I’m with Steve G. and Christopher Hitchens ‘God is Not Great’.
Thanks again for making me smile, it reaffirms my intelligence to see this kind of post.

Believe What is it really? What is defined in Websters, : n. To accept what is real or true. 2. To credit with veracity. 3. to think: support 4. To hold Religious beliefs,.
What you feel in your heart. Your feel it beating in your chest as your heart races when you run, when you meet someone new.
Has it changed in the past eons of life on the planet. Like the word cash at one time it ment a storage of food, now money. Similar yes, You can get coinage from having thing stashed away and you sell or barter to others. Yes.
The dead sea scrolls, where they found in the 1940’s Was there other Gospels from different people yes. Did some deify Jesus and some just have him subject to being just a man. Yes / No. Has there been conspiracies, with in the Church, in Goverment, In your own lives. Do you belive the sun will rise tomorrow or do you know it will rise. will it blow it self up for being a G2 star. So ponder on that for a while. Me, If I wake in the morning the fight is half over. So I say that the document is real in it own way Its a piece of paper with typing on it, hand written word even though some are mispelled Tangable. or is it just a Virtural piece of someones inteligent property. If so its still real to someone in both respects. So I still Say What is Belief, and of you.

  20. Aries

Oh I must add that the world is more that 6000 years old for anyone who might think that I agree with this parent that is is only that old, or 10,000 years. Thats about how long mans has been on this beautiful blue planet.
Oh yeay to the envirimental person about carbon gas Your most likly a tree hugger well if there was no carbon gas you would not be hugging a tree. Or alive for that matter. Trees eat up carbon, let off oxgen you breathe oxygen such you stay alive. By the way I live in maple country an I have yet to see a maple tree reach it top height yet. Sugar maples about 80-100 ft. Nope not yet Other maples 120 Ft. Dont belive me look it up Or come to PA and messure one for yourself.

  21. Aries

Oh I know I spelled Environmental wrong.

  22. george walters

I guess no-one still did’nt read the book of “JOB” to find eveidence that “Great Lizards” were livin among man kind during Job’s time.
Let’s not forget to,that it had never rained on the earth til Noah’s time cause the earth had a canopy around it & up until Noah’s time there was always mist coming up from the earth to keep the planet nourished & fed etc……………….Read the book of JOB in the Bible (Old Testament) & it mentions great lizards etc……enough said & God Bless

  23. bluk9t

Yes there was “great lizards” during mans time but there was not dinos. The Oxgyen levels in the air were far to weak to support dino life. Also it did rain before or this great planet called earth would be lava. Also trees that Noah used to build his boat never would have grown.

Question… How come people worship beings that we never see, yet some hear voice in there head. But we do not worship the planet we live on, our home, mother earth. Earth in a cense gave us life and continues to support us.

  24. george walters

for all the non-believers (non Christians) who have been posting here, you need to go this site that also has a weekly show on TBN.,hopefully it’ll open all your closed evelotuinary minds…lol

  25. ray

Can you guys explain the dinosaur footprints that were found with human footprints inside of them?

How about the trees that have petrified yet cross through different eons of rock strata?

Explain how the rivers of the earth haven’t eroded away ALL land (hint: calculate how much sediment they deposit in the ocean per year and compare that to the land mass of the earth). The average depth of all the sediment in the whole ocean is less than 400 meters. That’s only 12 million years worth.

With their short 5,700-year half-life, no carbon 14 atoms should exist in any carbon older than 250,000 years. Yet it has proven impossible to find any natural source of carbon below Pleistocene (Ice Age) strata that does not contain significant amounts of carbon 14, even though such strata are supposed to be millions or billions of years old. Conventional carbon 14 laboratories have been aware of this anomaly since the early 1980s, have striven to eliminate it, and are unable to account for it.

Evolutionary anthropologists now say that Homo sapiens existed for at least 185,000 years before agriculture began, during which time the world population of humans was roughly constant, between one and ten million. All that time they were burying their dead, often with artifacts. By that scenario, they would have buried at least eight billion bodies. If the evolutionary time scale is correct, buried bones should be able to last for much longer than 200,000 years, so many of the supposed eight billion stone age skeletons should still be around (and certainly the buried artifacts). Yet only a few thousand have been found. This implies that the Stone Age was much shorter than scientists thought.

When will science become science again and face these types of facts rather than disregarding them?

I don’t care what you “believe.” What does the evidence say?

  26. Peter Scott

The ignorance of some of these people on this forum is phenomenal. Global Warming has nothing to do with man made CO2. The sea produces thousands of times more CO2 than mand and even then CO2 only makes up a tiny fraction of our atmosphere. I don’t worry about global warming because climate change has been occuring since the dawn of time, look at the ice age or the Bronze age. As for the disdain that many seem to hold of religion and more specifically Christianity, it is completely unfounded. I’ll grant that religious wars have occurred but that is a result mans inherent sinful nature, not a result of religion itself. The belief that you are instantly idiotic if you believe in Christianity requires a complete ignorance of history. The Scottish enlightenment was achieved in a time when Christianity was the only belief system in existance. The movement towards evolution can actually be linked to the end of the enlightenment. Read up on your history and your science and then you might realise that religion doesn’t have any correlation with stupidity.

  27. Fush

Jeez, they’re kind of forcing their child into a life of narrow mindedness and general stupidity, right? I’m not saying Christianity is all bad, although it blatantly is, but by simply not letting their child go on a school trip of all things they’re showing that they are not willing to let that child experience the world and allow them to make up their minds about religion.

That sort of thing is child abuse. You should never force your beliefs on another human being. Even if it did come out of your vagina.

  28. Legendrella

Loool @ The world is only 6000 years old.

Hmm Explain the fossil fuels that have existed for millions of years BP

also try and rebuke everything that Ray correctly stated and i will drop my view of the world being 4.5 billion years old, and believe in the 6000 year old flat and round ( basically a coin) and supported by pillar earth. loool

  29. Atheist

I'll check out that site, if you do a few things first.
One: Read whatever holy books/scrolls your religion has.
Two: Read a science book about the creation of the earth and the big bang theory. (Don't say it's just a theory, as a common thought that goes through an Atheist's head, but is too polite to be said is that the bible is just a bedtime story.)
Three: Look up the show “The Atheist Experience” on youtube or other similar websites.

  30. Starr

Call me dumb,, call me stupid, call me a Jesus freak, but call me saved and a believer of Christ as our Savior who died on the cross for my sins so I may have eternal life
God Bless you all and I will pray for your souls!
