Yes, the story is far from original, it traces back at least to “The last of the Mohicans” (another recent incarnation of the plot can be found on “The last Samurai”).
But the text replacement is as funny as it gets! :)
It’s really interesting to read all these movies that Avatar seems to have aped. I guess that means that the earliest movie out of the group wins for originality. For my two cents, I would say that the movie that Avatar most closely resembles is by far… Battle for Terra. It requires absolutely no stretch of the imagination. You have the alien goddess, alien planet, colorful winged beasts, outer space marine (or at least soldier) in the Jake Sully role, etc.
I loved Avatar. However, I wrote about what I found to be Avatar’s biggest flaw. I doubt this issue was in Pocahontas, but check it out and let me know.
I thought that many of the elements in Avatar were very original.
People claim its too similar to ‘Fern Gully’ As well…but like…Avatar owns
Pocahontas, DWW, and F/G.
Its not the “best” movie ever, but still solid enough to see it.

Obvious, but still funny. The fact that both protagonists have the same initials (J.S.) really does it for me.

..and Jake having to ride the dragon before being fit to lead the Navii is very similar to Paul Atreides having to ride the Worm in “Dune” ;-)
