The following 101 quotes are some that I have stumbled upon on the web, or seen in books / popular culture. Each quote was either written by an atheist, or is about atheism in general.

- I believe in God, only I spell it Nature. - Frank Lloyd Wright
- We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing all-powerful God, who creates faulty Humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes. - Gene Roddenberry
- To surrender to ignorance and call it God has always been premature, and it remains premature today. - Isaac Asimov

- If I were not an atheist, I would believe in a God who would choose to save people on the basis of the totality of their lives and not the pattern of their words. - The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. - Richard Dawkins
- A God who kept tinkering with the universe was absurd; a God who interfered with human freedom and creativity was tyrant. If God is seen as a self in a world of his own, an ego that relates to a thought, a cause separate from its effect. he becomes a being, not Being itself. An omnipotent, all?knowing tyrant is not so different from earthly dictators who make everything and everybody mere cogs in the machine which they controlled. 1I have read every one of these quotes and I have an answer for every one. I am a Christian. The persons who said these things assumed that they knew what all Christians and Christian denominations believe.

I think you kind of shoot your cause in the foot when you use quotes from a comedian out of context. And fun fact: Colbert teaches Sunday School.
Also I hope this verbal masturbation of yours has made you feel better about your life and I hope you have convinced yourself that your right. Because that’s the only reason anyone does anything like this.

10Some great quotes there. And nothing I can’t agree with.
In the (paraphrased) words of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams when interviewed by Richard Dawkins for the recent mini-series on Darwin: “Well it’s more poetic language than a statement of fact” (on the bible).

13And saying that Stalin was bad because he was an atheist is ABSURD…there are a lot of people in history that have committed crimes in the name of religion (Crusades, Witch hunts, Jihad, etc) These acts were committed because people belonged to a certain faith.
I challenge you to show me events in history that have taken place in the name of atheism…

14It’s funny that you should say that because Atheism is the belief of nothing, so you think that ‘faith’ is the actual enemy. We place our faith in things all the time, even in the Atheist’s Holy Grail, SCIENCE. You put faith in a seat belt, not knowning if it will break, you put faith roads that should not crumble, faith is and will always be, what makes us different from the other monkey’s in the zoo.
Paveen
August 26th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
15I think that you misconstrue faith in this sense, we are making an informed decision based on science during our daily activity. We know that the chance that the seat belt will not break is minuscule due to the testing, the regulatory agencies and other institutions. The things that we place “faith” on is tangible and any individual and verify the information if necessary.
in religion this is not the case, e.g the bible says that God is a supreme being and thus humans cannot possibly comprehend his/her nature. It is thing kind of blind faith that leads to so much bloodshed, irrational behavior and stifles curiosity.
I am sorry to say that animals also exhibit faith in your sense, imagine a dog and its owner. The dog has faith that the owner will not mix in poison with the daily portion of dog food. So TomWaitsFan, I really don’t see your point.

16Paveen, half of the list is about crimes in the name of religion. That’s why I had to mention crimes in the name of atheism. And you dismissed even the idea that Stalin’s crimes had something to do with atheism. What did you use to support your argument? Only capitalization…

17I am sorry but what proof do you have that Stalin committed his crimes because he was an atheist (i don’t even know if he..) I will give one simple reason why Stalin committed his crimes, to consolidate political power.
I would like to hear your argument about how Stalin committed his crimes in the name of atheism (tried not to use capitalization this time :) )

18Didn’t the crusades have something to do with political power? Yes. But the masses were led in the name of God. Stalin led people in the name of atheism (and some other things). In the real world no idea is nice and clean.

August 26th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
19Huh? Crusades were called by the church not kings of countries. I ask you to show me one source which claims Stalin led people in the name of atheism…I am sorry to say that atheism is hardly the motivating force as the religions of the world such as Christianity, Islam, etc.
You cannot say that people committed actions (good or bad) because of religion unless it was in the name of the religion. According to your argument, Christians commit the most murders, rapes, etc because they make the largest group of people on earth.
Since people kill in the name of the crusades or jihad, the religion gets the blame.
Atheist
August 26th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
20Crusades were called by the church - and kings. The church was in the business of politics. How can you separate these two things?
Atheism was an integral part of communism. Stalin’s Russia was build on this ideology and everything was done in its name.
I never said that you can’t blame religion for what’s done in its name. But atheism deserves the same treatment.
My bottom line is: religion or atheism, neither is clean.

21This is one of those stupid posts meant to incite people. Why does there have to be fights between atheists and Christians? What’s so wrong with believing? Why worry so much if someone CHOOSES not to believe.
And to the dudes arguing about Stalin and the Crusades: Christian or not, as long as it involves human beings evil things will occur.

22Oh yes, clearly Stalin committed his atrocities because he was an atheist. Similarly, Hitler committed his atrocities because he was a vegetarian. Or because he was a teetotaller and non-smoker. Pick your favourite non-sequitur.
As one of the quotes above states, it doesn’t take religion to make good people do good things, or evil people (like Hitler and Stalin) to do evil things.

24Chill, guys. I’ve got to admit, I’m an atheist, but if you’re happy which whatever belief you’ve chosen, why do you need to argue with each other about it? Just believe what you think is right, and whatever suits your life.

25I do not hate any religion. I do hate those who never question their beliefs, who never bother to ask “why” they are doing what they do. Furthermore, I hate those who blindly accept faith, without reason or logic. If reason supports your faith, there is no harm in accepting it.
No faith can be proved false. No religion can be dis-proved. Not Christianity, not Islam. No, not even that of those morons who ran around outside the Revenge of the Sith premiere screaming “May the Force be With You.”
Atheism is not belief, it is disbelief. No true atheist can be completely and wholly sure there is no God — but he or she can be sure that Jesus, Moses and Mohammad were the most talented liars ever born.

31How can God “exist” if God is the one who created Existence in the first place?
Franko
September 11th, 2008 at 3:41 am
32A lot of these quotes attack religion. But attacking religion does not disprove the existence of God, as God would exist despite the existence of religion.
Some other quotes merely attack God, but don’t disprove God’s existence at all.
The most compelling argument was by Sam Harris: “If we expect God to subscribe to one religion at the exclusion of all the others, then we should expect damnation as a matter of chance. This should give Christians pause when expounding their religious beliefs, but it does not.”
I have often thought about this very thing. But the way this quote puts it is very clear. If salvation is based on one’s religion, then it is accidental. One cannot control the conditions of one birth, or the society into which he is born. It would not seem fair for God to deny salvation to someone because he never had access to the true faith. But this quote doesn’t disprove the existence of God; it supposes the existence of God and attacks the notion of religion. Hardly an atheistic argument.
There are three major world religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) that all believe in the same God. All these religions believe that salvation is exclusive to them. It would be unfair to believe that God would only save those by accident of their religion. But since each of those religions has God as similar belief, maybe they all have a chance of being saved. Which would mean that salvation is not earned through one’s religion, but through something else. Maybe God wants us to live a good life and isn’t picky about the religion.

33Wow … great collection.
I am from India and was raised as a Hindu. Having seen poverty up close … I became an atheist.
To those of you who still believe in God … I implore you to pack up your bags and go help the people leaving in abject poverty. No ?
There are christian organizations that help poor people … but their underlying intent is to convert them to Christianity. Regardless that still does not prove the silly notion of the existence of god … since he/she would not have let that happen in the first place. Akin to Bush send troops as part of the surge … to clean up the mess that he himself created.
The bottom 90% of the worlds population is significantly more spiritual than the top 10%. Go figure !!

“the bottom 90% of the worlds population (in terms of wealth) …”
Sudeep Chatterjee
September 13th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
35What exactly do you mean by “wealth” and how do you define it?
Which if you mean money, — its nothing but a piece of paper which promises to the bearer of that pc. of paper that the Govt. (of whichever country he happens to be in and one can call it that country’s currency!), that (the berer) is given an assurance that that piece of paper is a statement which promises to exchange/barter it in kind with GOLD, or anything equivalent, since this metal will legally be a piece of property which can be used as ‘barter’ in return for anything he wants, in exchange !! Right?
So what does one define “wealth” ! –… something which is exchageable for any eatable, becase if one does not need have access to food, then he will eventually die. BUT THIS “WEALTH” BY ITSELF CANNOT FEED ONES BELLY.
After all we are also a mamal whose basic intinct, till today, is ..SURVIVAL ! After that comes everthing, and anything as ‘left-over’ is extra & one stocks up for the rainy day. Or if one has enough to sqander, then it will be used for anything, fist-pleasure, second- stisfy the WANTS and so on.
Therfore, in todays rat race, is called CASH or as you put it “WEALTH”
So for those children(in proverty) are actually fighting for survival, i.e. FOOD.
So my friend what is your definition of the term WEALTH & POVERTY?
Is it “material or matter”
If its materialistic then the answer is MONEY!
If its MATTER, then comes another million dollar question, which even Einstien could not discover it nor define during his life time ?? [not e=mc-sqaure]
Was that his ultimate goal or isnt that what eveyone is still trying to prove/disprove.
Let me put forth one small question : There are suppossedly “Black Hole” which has been speculated and a zillion theoretical suppositions have been used to explain what it actually is. So far as I know the most viable or likely suppossition that it consist of highly compressed matter which has got such ipossibly high gravitational force that nothing escapes, not even light!
But if its MATTER then one should be physically see it, feel it, smell it, taste it, hear noise generated by such a powerfull material … but so far no-one has experienced or proved any of the above. Simply because our definition of matter is basically based on the assumption of the question —- does matter exist! & if it exists then one should be able to OBSERVE it, i.e, SEE it to exist! If one cant see/feel it, only then does it EXISTs !!
What about these famous qoutes:
“I think therefore I exist”, but is think(thought) a piece of matter..?
OR
Is it our imagination which is proof of existance because that’s not MATTER as we are tought. Its a supposedly a term used frequently, specially by medical people ….. HALUCINATION !!
Well if its a halucination or imagination which has been defined as non- existanct, therfore it not matter? Right…quid pro quo..!
Well then if we oursleves have not been able to diffrentiate between MATTER or IMAGINATORY.
So wher does GOD come in this equation ???????????
If we cant prove that we exist and are not a piece of imagianation or halucination ??
So can one say GOD exists or does one imagine that there is GOD, just to cover up our own inadiquancy to explain any event or MATTER.
So comes the important question. If we cant prove that we exist(as a piece) of matter, how can one say anything about the presence of GOD ( which is suppossedly and ultimately try to explain our own indiqency to diffrentiate between matter & imagination)
That should have been enough to doubt your own existance, forgat about trying to explain what/who is GOD.
Its all our imagination !!! Does that mean that whatever we see, hear, feel or taste are all imagination. Then we safely that our SOUL is the only thing that MATTERs. So if soul is matter, we cant see it, hear it, taste it BUT WE CAN ONLY FEEL IT, therefore it EXISTS & if it EXISTS then that is what is MATTER as we have defined it., which one cant see, feel, taste or hear it, BUT still thats the only thing we can say as matter.
That raises another big Question WHAT EXISTS IS MATTER OR WHAT WE FIND MISSING IS!
Finally I can draw only one truth.. oops! sorry truth has to EXIST and thats what we are still struggling to answer….. By the way which way is your head spinning 000 or 1
I hope that is enough for one dose!
I will be glad to hear what do you have to say about what I have just put into words(virtally) would love to keeeping this issue carried further until I/You/We come to a conclusion ! {{ thats the TRUTH}}

36The basic rule of the jungle is aptly adapted by humans to cover up what they still dont know, but tha jungle law is”SURVIVAL FOR THE FITTEST”
“THUS WE HAVE REMAINED ANIMALS, BECAUSE WE HAVE NOT YET LEARNT ANY OTHER WAY TO SURVIVE”
PLEASE EXPLAIN WHERE DOES THE EXISTANCE OR NONEXISTANCE OF GOD FIT IN ??
SO ARE YOU AN ATHEIST ??
BUT JUST BY CALLING YOURSELF ATHEIST IS THE FIRST & FOREMOST THIMG YOU ARE ACKNOWLEDGING IS THE EXISTANCE OF GOD ITSELF OTHERWISE IF YOU REALLY ARE AN ATHEIST THEN THERE IS NO GOD THEREFORE THERE IS NOTHING CALLED AS AN ATHEIST !! is there ???

37Say, I don’t believe in UFOs … so I am acknowledging the existence of UFOs ? Genius !
BTW … my favorite quote from the above list of quotes - “I still say a church steeple with a lightning rod on top shows a lack
of confidence.” - Doug McLeod

41Tom (#24), I’m an atheist too. This argument DOES matter, and I, for one, will continue to explain my viewpoint to religious-minded people because religion is full of lies, tries to control peoples’ private lives, takes away personal rights, stops logical thinking, convinces people to be mindless followers instead of thinking for themselves, forces ridiculous rules and laws down our throats, divides regions and groups of people at a deep emotional level, causes endless conflicts and wars, tries to stop scientific research that helps mankind, creates unjustifiably tax-exempt organizations, promotes mistreatment of women and gays and children, and prompts its followers to knock on my door to try to sell their fairy tales to me.
HOWEVER… religion and its followers ARE useful for a good laugh with their billboards and bumper stickers.

42for the believers:
if you knew god wasn’t magical, couldn’t bring you life, or death. never created life, never did anything great. if you knew that by praying to him you wouldn’t get anything out of it — would you still believe in him?

An Atheist

44I’m an atheist.. because atheism is the reply of the Scientific Facts to the bane of religion, On his first day, some bloody slightly intelligent man created a non-existent concept and named it god to explain whatever he could not and thereby control his unintelligent fellowbeings using the mystery of god. And why i hate them, bcoz they popularise god by telling that every good thing is god’s and every bad thing is your fault and make a lot of money, the actual god of those people,in the name of god
I’m an atheist, just not because i love scientific theories, but because religions are a bane and god is an entity created by the intelligent of the older generations of humanity that they never could explain, to disapprove and defeat the super-intelligent people who were considered crazy just because a vast majority could not understand the truth which they explained with science. Nowadays those days are long gone, Now he existence of god has another purpose rather. It is now the dog of the people who actually use it for obtaining the salvation in their higher god, called MONEY. It is also used to create a mob, an army, so they can influence the democratic politics, exhibiting votebank. The power is a requirement always and in democracy, one of the most risky but profitable investment is politic, because along with power, that needs a lot of money to establish, comes a lot of money.Only problem you need a lot of money and people with you. MONEY is power. The unholy link between he religion and power is always inevitable. In the crusades, in the courtships there was always a priest or equivalent who used to control the rulers to a bit.
So do you still believe god exists

46I love how fun it is to get my Christian friends riled up, ‘cuz I’m a complete athiest and it’s fun to hear “but, but” whenever I prove a point. If any Christian would bother to tell me exactly why they believe in God, I’d love to debate. You can find me on this page.
